Milestone

I forgot to post about this big milestone from the other day. I went grocery shopping and bought a jar of peanut butter. Because we're almost to the end of the LAST jar of peanut butter that we got while on WIC.

LOL. I'm not sure whether this is more a statement of how ridiculously much peanut butter WIC gives you, or of how little peanut butter we eat. ;) Actually, I eat it a fair amount, but it's only recently that the kids have started to like it -- and neither of them is allowed to have it at school, so we only eat it at home.

We stopped receiving WIC when I started this job, or more properly speaking, when Ruthie turned one: March '07, so almost a year and a half ago. At that time we had something like five or six unopened jars of peanut butter. LOL. Now we're down to two almost-empty ones: one at home and one that I keep at my office. And now the new one that I bought the other day.

It's funny -- that whole thing feels like a million years ago. As bad as it was being laid off and out of work for six months, the truth is, it was actually a really good thing to have happen in a lot of ways. It gave me extra time with Ruthie while she was a baby. It got me into my current job which is a really great one (and which I never would have even considered accepting if it had come along while I was employed, since they wanted a contractor). And our time on WIC actually prompted me to expand my cooking horizons, mainly because we were getting so much cheese, but also the eggs and other stuff. I've been doing a ton of cooking lately, as you know if you read this lj regularly; I'm teaching myself new recipes and new techniques, and really getting more comfortable in general with the "throw some stuff together" style of cooking, which I never would have thought I could do. And in some ways I can trace all that back to WIC and the ridiculous piles of cheese. So maybe that, to some small extent, can help to explain why I felt moved to make mention of this milestone, the end of the last WIC jar of peanut butter. lol.

  • 14:25 Still fed up with Ruthie's daycare. No luck yet on scheduling tour of potential new place. Ruthie at dropoff: "I not belong here!" :( #
  • 18:02 @desktopdiva73 oh no!! that bites! #
  • 20:11 @desktopdiva73 yeah it could be worse, I guess -- could be pay cuts for everyone! #
  • 20:11 I continue to be entertained by observing which acquaintances do and don't notice my new glasses. People are funny. #
