mamajoan: me in hammock (cool dude)
Yesterday marked eight months since my nephew Bastian was born. It also marked three years since [livejournal.com profile] metafrantic and [livejournal.com profile] sandykidd officially tied the knot; and a bit more than one year since they moved here to Boston. I gotta say that it has really been awesome having them here.

You know, you grow up with someone, and then you go off to college and they go off to college, and you grow into a different person, an adult, and they do the same; and suddenly there you are, an adult, with an adult sibling, and your relationship based almost solely on who you both used to be and on shared experiences that are years out of date. Whereas the experiences that shaped who you are now are not shared. So, it can feel kind of like you're carrying on a relationship through a time warp, particularly when you live separated by large amounts of distance and thus see each other only infrequently.

And so, it has been really neat getting to know my brother anew, as adults, and forging a new relationship with him. Sometimes it's hard not to slip back into old patterns, but I think we're doing pretty well in forming new, adult ways of interacting. (Having the shared experience of parenthood is a big help there too.)

It's been great getting to know SK as well, and it's been really cool to observe their relationship with each other. They make a great team and a great couple. The way they are together -- I could be humorous and say it's disgusting. ;) I could be sappy and say it's inspiring. But I'll just say that we should all be so lucky as to find someone to be that way with, and to still be that way after three years (and four and ten and fifty). They are two very lucky people, and I'm glad that they're around.
