Xmas, and the aftermath
Dec. 28th, 2003 10:15 amI have discovered the secret to avoiding all the angst and unpleasantness of Christmas, and it is: don't celebrate Christmas. ;)
On Christmas Eve Day, I picked up Isaac at daycare early and took him home. We had a nice nap together and then packed up a bunch of stuff and went to mom/grandma's house, and stayed the night.
On Christmas, we slept in (which, with baby, means we got up around 9am), and had a leisurely morning of doing nothing much. Then in the afternoon we went for a walk; the weather was fairly nice. We walked to Harvard Square, marveling at how empty it was and how many shops were closed. I don't think we've ever gone "out and about" on Xmas Day before, so it was really interesting (to me, anyway). My mom said it reminded her of Paris in August. The vast majority of people we saw (not that we saw very many) were Asians and/or people with babies. We stopped for a bite to eat in a Chinese restaurant, which was packed because it was one of the only places open.
Then we went home and watched "Chicago" on DVD (rented) and laughed at ourselves for doing the traditional Jewish "rent movies and eat Chinese food" Christmas thing. :) I was just excited because it was the first actual movie I had seen since Isaac was born!
On Boxing Day, after a frustrating mixup (long story), I took Isaac to the pediatrician for his 6-month checkup. It went fine. He is in good health, weighs 18 pounds 11 ounces, is 26 inches long, basically is doing fine. He got three immunizations, and he cried, but calmed down pretty quickly once they were done. (I am practicing not calling them "shots" since someone on a parenting list discovered that her son was linking them in his mind to gunshots.)
Then we went back to mom/grandma's place and did some cleaning and reorganizing of "the baby's room." Thanks in large part to
ww1614 and
anotherjen, we had TONS of baby clothing to go through. :) Later we watched another rented movie, "Whale Rider," a very interesting New Zealand film, and we had food delivered, and Isaac pooped a WHOLE lot and we gave him a bath and he pooped more and we laughed and said "ew" a lot ;) and eventually we packed up the car and I took him home.
Saturday wasn't so much fun. Isaac's cold, which seemed to have gotten better, got worse again (or else he caught a new one, whatever). He was just soooo fussy and I was so frustrated because I couldn't figure out what he wanted/needed. A couple of times I resorted to giving him Tylenol "just in case it helps," which I hate doing. Then when he gets temporarily better I don't know whether the Tylenol actually helped or whether it was a coincidence. sigh.
I guess I hope that this is the side-effects of his immunizations, because that would mean it'll go away in a day or two. I seem to recall him being similarly fussy after his previous round of them. Anyway, I'm worn out from yesterday; it was just so tiring, never knowing whether he was going to be happy or cranky from one minute to the next, or what I could/should be doing to help him. I wish there were some way to explain to him that he will feel better soon. :(
Still, we had a nice holiday overall. It's amazing how much more relaxing it was without any folderol about gifts or trees or what have you. It's just nice to have four days off in a row, and to know that I'll be doing it all again next week. :)
